Tooth-colored fillings are made from a mixture of plastics called composite resin.

Are tooth-colored fillings better than metal fillings?

Tooth-colored fillings are better than metal fillings for many reasons:

1. They are just as effective, but virtually undetectable.
2. Metal mixtures, like amalgam, contain toxic substances like mercury.
3. Tooth-colored fillings are bonded to your tooth so they become part of your tooth, whereas metal fillings are packed into cavities and can become loose or fall out.
4. You don't have to remove as much of your natural tooth to apply a tooth-color filling as you do for a metal filling.

Can you replace my old metal filling with tooth-colored fillings?

Does dental insurance cover the cost of tooth-colored fillings?

You will have to contact your insurance company to find out. Many insurance companies cover at least part of the costs associated with tooth-colored fillings.

How many office visits are required for tooth-colored fillings?

For one or two new cavities, one appointment is usually enough. If you have more than two cavities, it could take three to four appointments.
