Crooked Teeth Treatment
Your smile is one of the very first features that other people notice about you, and if your teeth have problems, your appearance can be significantly impacted reducing your self-esteem and confidence. If you feel you have flaws in your teeth, you are certainly not alone. Having crooked teeth is a common dental flaw that affects our appearance, but thanks to the skill and artistry of highly trained cosmetic dentists such as Drs. Dennis and Deric Ikuta, crooked teeth can be a problem of your past.
Causes of Crooked Teeth
There are several reasons why people have crooked teeth. Some people's mouths are too small for their teeth, which causes the teeth to be crowded and to shift. In other cases, the upper and lower jaws are not the same size or are malformed, resulting in either an overbite or an underbite. In an overbite, there is excessive protrusion of the upper jaw, and in an underbite, the lower jaw protrudes forward causing the lower jaw and teeth to extend out beyond the upper teeth.
Some other causes of crooked teeth are:
- Genetics (crooked teeth can actually be inherited)
- Early loss of baby or adult teeth
- Improper fit of fillings or crowns
- Jaw too small
- Gum disease
- Misaligned jaw
- Facial injury
- Tumors of mouth/jaw
- Prolonged thumb-sucking, pacifier use, bottle use
Having crooked teeth can also lead to additional dental problems such as increasing the risk of tooth decay, cavities, and gingivitis, interfering with proper chewing, and causing excessive strain to the teeth, jaw and surrounding muscles.
Treatment Options
Cosmetic dentistry offers many options to treat and fix crooked teeth so you don't have to suffer any longer. If your teeth are severely misshapen, the best treatment may be to straighten them with braces, Invisalign (virtually invisible braces), or orthodontic procedures. If your teeth are only slightly crooked, tooth contouring and reshaping may be done, and porcelain veneers may be applied.
Drs. Dennis and Deric Ikuta will decide what treatment option is best for you after a thorough evaluation in their office.
